Colormaker: 6 Years of Solar and 900 Tonnes GHGs Saved

In September 2025, Brookvale’s sustainable manufacturer of pool paint, membranes, house paints, mural paints and screen print ink, Colormaker Industries; passed the milestones of their 6th anniversary of solar, and having saved 900 tonnes of GHGs (greenhouse gases) going out into the atmosphere since installing their solar array back in September 2019.

The Brookvale site has a 100 kW Solar Array, the world’s first commercially operating ReVolve® solar storate battery, a fleet of five EVs, a more efficient compressor, electric forklift and Mega-Shredder for repurposing cardboard. “Our recent power bills show negative usage and negative cost,” says David Stuart, Managing Director. “And overall, we now enjoy $37-50,000 a year in savings, which is a 7-10% return on investment.”

David Stuart, MD of Colormaker Industries with the ReVolve® solar storage battery. The battery is groundbreaking technology, made from nine second-life Nissan Leaf EV batteries.

Under David Stuart’s leadership, sustainability has always been a huge driver for the business. “I heard about the greenhouse effect for the first time in 1976. When I bought Colormaker, I knew it was my chance to do something about it.”

“All Colormaker paints are manufactured using 100% renewable energy. Many of the paints are low-VOC and all of the Colormaker paints are free from plastic microbeads. These are known to be harmful to our waterways and marine life,” continues David. “We also treat wastewater, recycle paper and metal and deliver our paints locally with EVs charged by our rooftop solar array.”

Colormaker is striving to be net zero by year end and just been advised that they were one of the very first businesses in NSW to be awarded NABERS NEPI Certification.

“Any business can take some steps towards net zero,” says David. “When we set out to go solar, we were full of trepidation, but this journey’s actually been an incredibly exciting one to be on and the savings have been fantastic, both financially and for the planet.”
